The Experience of an Ex-volunteer, Judith Myers

“Hi. My name is Judith Myers. I’m 17 years old and a student at Carmel High school in Indiana. I’m currently enrolled in my last semester on course to graduate in the summers before I start applying for an undergraduate degree at various universities across the U.S.

This is a tale of the time when I volunteered for Orphan Life Foundation. Here are the details of how my 2-month volunteering experience was.

Last summer, like my friends and other school-going 17-year-olds, I was looking for volunteering opportunities in order to complete the mandatory social service experience requirement needed to graduate from high school. This is when I came across the Orphan Life Foundation while surfing the web.

I was impressed by the scale of their operations and what they were doing to help orphan children in various parts of the world. Having been in the company of such children (one of my childhood friends had lost her father and mother when she was just 8 years old), I knew the difficult situations they were faced with. So, I immediately signed up for their summer volunteering program – and it was the best decision of my life!

During my time there, I got an opportunity to directly interact with children who were less fortunate than me and who needed the support of people like us. There were children as little as 2 years old who had no one to look after them; this was a truly saddening moment. I felt utterly blessed and grateful for the life I was living and for the luxuries that I thought were basic human needs.

Seeing those vulnerable children in old, worn out clothes eating food that was nowhere near fancy, I was left heart-rendered. They were desperate to get accommodated at a school but sadly, the facilities were limited.

This experience brought me back down to earth. I realized that my life was full of luxuries whereas those parentless children longed for the basic necessities and rights. They had no family to look after them at such a young age. Many of them cried themselves to sleep thinking about their family. They had a whole lifetime to live without a family when I could never even think of being separated from my parents even for a day!
The days I spent talking to them, laughing with them, and simply serving them with love and care were hands down the golden days of my life.
I used to hand out candies to children every weekend just to be a source of happiness in their lives. I know it wasn’t a big gesture but the way their faces used to light up with joy told something else. I realized that no gesture is big or small when it’s done with pure intention.
Distributing candies was the least I could do to bring a smile to their otherwise sad faces. To say the least, this was by far the best volunteering experience I have had in my life. I wouldn’t trade it for any luxury in this world – this is for sure!”
