If we pause and reflect a bit, we will see that the human family is rightly considered to be a wonderful gift from God. Here, it is very important to understand that our family is a direct reflection of the Lord’s boundless love and affection for us.

However, we should do well to remember that not everyone has been fortunate enough to be blessed with such great love; in fact, there are many children in sub Saharan Africa and Burkina Faso, in particular, who are in urgent need of immediate support.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” ~James

We have to understand the holy scripture in light of what is asked from us. Currently, there are more than 140 million children all over the world whose hearts are aching for the love of a family that they can call their own.

Of course, thinking about the sheer magnitude of the orphan crisis can be unnerving and can leave us totally overwhelmed. But think of it as more of an opportunity to really make a difference. We have all heard about the parable of David and Goliath. When the Israelites saw the giant warrior before them, they trembled in despair and thought, ‘He is so big we can never beat him.’ Now David, on the other hand thought, “He is so big, I can never miss.”

Going all the way to Burkina Faso may not be possible for most people. But then the good Lord always reminds us that ‘charity begins at home’

“But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless” -Psalm

Hence, one can easily adopt a child and bring him over to their country. As privileged individuals, it is possible to love and nourish him till all his scars are healed, and he becomes not just an honest, God-fearing individual, but the very embodiment of Christen virtue. No action brings greater joy to our Lord than this.

Yes, it is difficult to bring a total stranger into our home, especially one whose life has been so different from our own. But if we will not heal his wounds and give him a second chance, who will?
