Orphans of Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso is one of the least developed countries in the world. It is also one of the worst places to be as an orphan – one of the reasons being the problem of malnutrition among orphans.
You’d be shocked to hear that 770,000 children are living in Burkina Faso without a family. They are missing out on parental love, care, and support. Thousands of these unfortunate children have been orphaned by AIDS and many have been abandoned by their parents. Families find it easier to give their children up, considering the unstable economic conditions of the country.
On top of this, foster care centers and orphanages are almost non-existent in Burkina Faso and the ones that exist are in terrible condition, lacking the necessary resources and facilities to take care of the orphans.
Malnutrition among Orphans
Poor health and malnutrition are the biggest problems faced by orphans in Burkina Faso. Most of these vulnerable children have little to no access to nutritious food. The hygiene and healthcare conditions in the country are also quite poor. Most of the caregivers at foster care facilities and orphanages lack the basic knowledge and resources required to take care of orphans, meet their nutritional needs, and address their healthcare concerns.
Poor nutrition often leads to diseases, causing the physical health of orphans to deteriorate. It also affects their mental health and wellbeing and leaves them exposed to a wide array of mental health problems. Moreover, the cognitive development of these children is also hampered due to nutritional deficit.
It has also been seen that many of these vulnerable children die of malnutrition. If this isn’t heartbreaking, we don’t know what is!
The Solution
To eradicate malnutrition among orphans, we, as a community, need to step forward and do as little or as much as we can to help improve the lives of the vulnerable children. Orphan Life Foundation is playing an active part in improving nutritional and health conditions of the orphans in Burkina Faso. We strive to ensure that every orphan has access to good-quality food, nutritional supplements, infant formula, and first-aid products. We also go out of our way to educate the caregivers on nutrition and health-related topics so that they can take good care of the unfortunate children.
