The Effect of COVID19 on the Lives of Orphans

While the COVID19 pandemic has upended the lives of people worldwide, it has especially served as a devastating blow to orphans. The effect of COVID19 on the lives of orphans is serious! Because of the ongoing crisis, foster care centers and orphanages worldwide are facing uncertain situations. Everything is on pause until the pandemic is behind us. People have been ordered to practice social distancing and stay at home to ensure their own and their family’s safety and health.

Foster Care and Adoption Challenges

As expected, people are not willing to come forward to adopt orphans during these unfortunate times. While foster care facilities and orphanages may find some foster parents online and conduct interviews on call, some critical aspects of the process like home inspections can’t be done virtually. Most importantly, government offices and courts are shut down in many states. Thus, foster parents who were looking forward to adopting orphan children are facing unprecedented challenges.

Orphans across the World Need Our Help

We understand that all of us are going through challenging times. The novel coronavirus is testing our patience and taking a toll on our mental health and wellbeing. We are constantly worrying about ours and our family’s safety. However, let’s take a minute to think about the less fortunate children in orphanages and foster care centers. They are the most vulnerable in these times, as they don’t have a stable, loving family to take care of them.

Although caring for orphans during COVID19 has become more challenging than ever, it’s good to see that orphanages and foster care facilities are going the extra mile to ensure optimal hygiene and safety. Moreover, they are helping children through this difficult time by staying connected and following a daily routine. It is crucial to understand that most of these children have lived a hard life marked by uncertainty and trauma. The ongoing crisis is likely to make them feel vulnerable again, triggering unpleasant memories or symptoms.

At Orphan Life Foundation, we are trying our best to help orphans deal with the changes that have come with the closing of the schools and lack of contact with their friends, peers, and mentors. We are constantly on the lookout for any signs of stress and resurfacing of past traumatic experiences, anxiety, and fear. We are teaching them to take care of themselves and others and reassuring them that things will go back to normal. We are also trying to help foster families get their hands on essential resources.
