On August 21, 2022, the world will gather to honor the victims of terrorism for the fifth time on the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute.
While armed wars, violent crimes, and terrorist activities all over the globe continue to grab people’s attention, victims themselves continue to feel confused and anxious.
The current alarming headlines also intensify and trigger the traumas of victims of terrorism. However, we can’t begin to imagine the level of trauma they have been through.
Here’s what you need to know about the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute.
This Year’s Theme
This year’s International Day theme, “Memories”, was chosen after extensive outreach to victims and victim advocacy groups.
Memories unite us like a scarlet thread, a fil rouge, representing our shared humanity and sympathy with the people who have lost all in the cruelest of ways.
The United Nations Office for Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) will air a high-level pre-recorded event on Sunday, August 21, 2022, titled “Surviving Terrorism: The Power of Memories.” The “Memories” campaign is the heart of this year’s online commemoration.
It documents the experiences of victims of terrorism from all across the world through video, still images, and descriptive text.
Why this Day is So Important For Victims of Terrorism
It is a tribute to victims of Terror Acts
Countless innocent people are killed every year due to wicked acts of terrorism. This day was established to pay respects to those who have lost their lives as a result of terrorism.
Moreover, it honors and pays respect to these victims’ families whose world changed in the blink of an eye.
It educates the community as a whole
Terrorism is a threat to human dignity and a breach of the most fundamental human rights.
All over the world, people will be taking time out on this day to reflect on the importance of defending and advancing human rights and basic liberties.
Moreover, they will be condemning all the terrorist acts that have consumed valuable lives all over the world.
It’s a way to help those who have survived a tragedy
Terror attack survivors often face long-term psychological, emotional, and financial repercussions.
This day was established to offer support and show solidarity with those who have lost loved ones due to terrorism or survived these terror attacks and to encourage others to do the same.
Orphan Life Foundation is one of many organizations that was created by military veterans who have seen terrorism upfront.
We have established our orphanage funding organization to help displaced children in various parts of the world have access to clean water and education.
You can donate to orphans in India, the Philippines, and parts of Africa through our website. Check out our programs and projects or contact us for any questions or information.
